Why Networked Tools for Thought are Powerful
Felipe Fraga

Last 5 years were of extreme importance to the world of Tools for Thought.

Since then, we've witnessed the appearance of Networked Note-Taking, best exemplified by apps such as:

  • Roam Research

  • Workflowy

  • Obsidian

  • Logseq

This category of apps presents a new set of tools for humans to capture, synthesize and create knowledge.

"Well, how are they different?"

These tools extend the capabilities of note-taking and sense-making that were previously accessible to the public.

The major difference from traditional tools is non-linear thought.

Thinking in multiple directions, while still being able to trace back thoughts to their original starting place.

This is possible due to a structured way of storing and handling information which is well known in information science: Graphs.

By treating information using a graph structure, it is possible to connect notes (or any text) in a non-linear and non-hierarchical way.

This opens up new possibilities for how we think.

As the famous quote, states:

"We shape our tools and, thereafter, our tools shape us."
