I build brands @harry's & recently sold my petcare startup. I'm writing about Web3 & the opportunities/challenges it poses for consumer brands.

The Ultimate Win-Win: Build A Business To Get A Job
Flo

Let me take you back to late 2020. I was a couple of months into my Master's Degree, and most of my classmates had already secured big, juicy job offers.

I, on the other hand, had not.

Surrounded by super talented, highly competitive peers, I wasn't sure how to set myself apart with just a CV. I needed a job offer in my pocket by mid-2021, so I made a plan -

Instead of grinding through endless job applications, I was going to start a business (to help me get a job).

On the surface, that doesn't make a lot of sense, but stay with me. I had a decent business idea and a lot of time on my hands. Instead of choosing between starting a business or getting a job, I was going to combine the two.

By building a business, I could show employers actual proof of certain skills - marketing, design, copywriting, etc.

Best case scenario - my business takes off, and I don't have to get a job.

Worst case scenario - my business fails, but boosts my chances of securing a job.

Once I saw it this way, I knew I'd found the ultimate win-win. And it worked!

By attaching a 'business portfolio' to my job applications, I saw a huge increase in interviews & offers.

So, for any student that is on the fence about starting a business at uni, remember that you really can't lose (just don't fail your exams).
