I love e-ink devices. Ever since my first kindle -the 3rd generation one with the keyboard-an irony considering I swore I would never betray my beloved physical books. But as a mood reader, who usually read more than one book at a time, I couldn't argue the benefits.
As a writer- especially one plagued by migraines triggered by staring at LCD screens for long periods- the benefits were even more obvious. I researched two devices: the Remarkable 2 and the Boox Note Air. The Kindle Scribe wasn't out at that time, but even if it was I prefer the Note Air for the following reasons:
The Note Air is a full e-ink android tablet. It has Google play, allowing you to download any app you want. This makes it a flexible e-reader as well. For writing I use Jotterpad which syncs well with Scrivener, the writing software on my computer.
If you like to hand write, the native note taking software is pretty good. It even has decent handwriting to text conversion. Bonus, the pen is included, unlike the Remarkable marker which needs to be purchased separately. Having never used the Remarkable, I can't compare the writing experience but compared to an IPad with paperlike protector, the writing feel is better for me.
Marking up pdfs and other documents is possible. Great for editing a compiled manuscript.
Thin, light, portable.
Frontlit (unlike the Remarkable).
You don't need any subscription plan to sync notes, unlike Remarkable. For that matter you can download any sync apps (Google, Onedrive, Dropbox)
Bluetooth enabled for keyboards and headphones.
If you like colour (especially for annotating) the newer Boox devices support colour e-ink.
The newer devices have the boox super refresh technology which makes web browsing a better experience than traditional e-ink devices. This is great for research.
It supports split screen.
