In Louisiana, statuesque oak trees immediately cause me to stop and admire their nobility. The huge trunk, the large branches that grow close to the ground begging to be climbed, and the moss well placed as ornamentation throughout. Standing like a wise elder watching over the landscape as its leaves blow in the wind while it drops acorns to birth new life.
Support
Some of the oak trees are hundreds of years old and, to help them survive, their branches are supported by metal posts.
It is a reminder that, even in their glory, it is still important to ask for help. Without it, the branches would surely break from their heavy weight. The oaks sigh as the posts are placed beneath their outstretched arms thanking those who have lightened their load.
How many times do we carry a heavy load and continue on even though we are burdened, even though we are tired, even though we are sick without simply asking for help.
Safety
Oaks provide cover in the tropical summer heat and act as a respite.
Families gather underneath to enjoy the shade provided and enjoy the breeze as it flows through the leaves making a soft but audible fluttering sound. There are picnics held and children run around as the wind and the momentum causes their pretty white dresses to balloon. Laughter fills the air as they try to catch one another and venture climbing up the branches.
There is safety underneath, just as we often need a place to go, and escape the unrelenting charge of life.
Security
As I look at oak trees I am reminded of the mustard seed and how small it is in comparison.
It would seem necessary to have the faith of an oak big and bold, but no, only a mustard seed. Just a tiny amount of belief provides enough confidence for you to keep going. How powerful are we when partnered with this security.
I remind myself, in times of doubt and adversity, about the mustard seed and its size and tell myself all you need is a tiny bit of hope and you too, can move mountains.
If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move. Matthew 17:20
