The Hero's Journey
Caroline Roberts | Hero Training 101

What is the essence of heroic energy? A hero wants something and is willing to accept challenges in order to transform into the person capable of getting what they want. - Donald Miller

In his great book, Hero on a Mission, A Path to a Meaningful Life. Donald Miller walks us through the hero's journey.

Victim + Villain + Hero + Guide

  • The victim is the character who feels they have no way out.

  • The villain is the character who makes others small.

  • The hero is the character who faces their challenges and transforms.

  • The guide is the character who helps the hero.

These are the four characters we find in our favorite stories AND these are the four characters we play out in our daily lives.

What roles do you find yourself playing the most? Donald Miller gives a great example of this. He tells us:

"In my life I play all four characters. If I'm faced with an unfair challenge, I usually play the victim for a minute, feeling sorry for myself. If I'm wronged, I dream of vengeance, like a villain. If I come up with a good idea and want to make it happen, I switch into hero mode to take action, and if somebody calls and needs my advice, I play the guide."

How To Ruin A Good Story

One thing that will ruin a story fast is if the hero - the character that the story is about - acts like a victim. We cannot have a lead character in a good story that acts like a victim. This is true in stories and true in real life.

We ARE the hero of our life's story. If you find yourself playing the victim or villain role more than you would like, this one simple question is your hero's magic wand, ask yourself "What do I want?" Then get after it.

Cheers to switching into hero mode and taking action. Let's go heroes. Day 1.
