These 4 Typography-Related UI Issues Are Costing You Money! Here's How To Fix Them
Michelle

Simple UI issues in your website can be the difference between a conversion and a bounce.

I've been building websites for almost 10 years and I come across the same font/type-related issues all the time when browsing online.

That's why I've put together this list of the 4 most common type-related UI issues you can easily fix today:

Issue 1: Long blocks of text

  • What This Means: Your site has long chunks of text without paragraphs or proper spacing. This makes your content difficult to read as people can't scan over it.

  • How To Fix It: Use paragraphs, lists, and suitable line spacing to break up text. A paragraph shouldn't be more than 3-4 sentences.

Issue 2: No type hierarchy

  • What This Means: All text is the same size on the screen. This makes it hard to understand the structure or importance of the content. This makes scanning very difficult.

  • How To Fix It: Use a tool like a type-scale to implement a type hierarchy. Make sure headings are bigger than regular text so they stand out.

Issue 3: Too many fonts

  • What It Means: There are too many visually different fonts used so everything requires more brain power to read.

  • How To Fix It: Pick 1-2 different fonts max per design project/website. Or pick 1 font that has a lot of different variations and font weights.

Issue 4: Line length is too long

  • What It Means: Text is too wide on the screen which makes it difficult to scan. Our brains can only process so much at a time.

  • How To Fix It: Limit line length to 50-60 characters per line. You can check this in your designs and implement it with CSS properties.

These design issues revolve around making your content easy to scan. If it's easy to scan, people can find what they're looking for faster which keeps them coming back.
