Functional illiteracy is a term which I recently learned from Ryan Holiday (one of my favourite writers).

In this short essay, I'm going to unpack this concept, so that people can start understanding and start trying to become functionally literate.

Functional illiteracy, despite academic education, occurs when individuals neglect the habit of reading for self-development, hindering their critical thinking and intellectual growth. While academic institutions provide literacy tools, real education goes beyond textbooks. Functional illiteracy is more than a lack of reading; it reflects a missed opportunity for personal enrichment.

Academic education equips individuals with reading skills, but continuous engagement with diverse literature sharpens cognitive abilities and fosters a broader perspective. It's not just about mastering subjects; it's also about a lifelong habit of learning through diverse books. Functional illiteracy affects professional success and personal fulfilment, extending beyond academia.

Whenever I read a book on a topic out of my comfort zone, I feel a darkness lifted from my knowledge horizon. E.g. - I recently read "Never Split the Difference" by Chris Voss. Voss is a former FBI hostage negotiator and the CEO of The Black Swan Group Ltd. His writing in this book changed my perspective on negotiating with anyone. Each interaction with people in our lives is a negotiation. This book taught me some practical ways to improve on that essential skill.

To overcome Functional Illiteracy, we must recognize the importance of reading beyond academic requirements. Embracing books as companions on the journey of self-discovery bridges the gap between academic knowledge and practical wisdom, fostering a profound understanding of the world.

In essence, functional literacy isn't just a deficiency in reading skills; it represents a missed opportunity for continuous mind evolution through exploring the vast realm of human knowledge.
