The Paradox of Experience: How Entry-Level Professionals Can Stand Out Without Experience
Hon Yip

I have been in the corporate world for over 20 years and I've not got a leg up during the entire time.

Since dropping out of University and getting my first corporate job with no help whatsoever, I have learned a lot about what it takes to make yourself stand out from the competition and get your foot in the door. In fact, it's a lot easier than most people think. You just need to change how you approach things.

And yes, you can do this with no experience.

The 3 Ps In Getting Your Big Break Without Experience:

  1. Passion: If you don't know what you want to do and you're applying for everything under the sun, you're very unlikely to be enthusiastic about you're applying for and the recruiter will notice this. Get clear on what makes you tick and concentrate on that industry/role only. How stress free and focused would that be?

  2. Personality: I'm not saying you need to be all energetic and out there, but people connect and gel with others that are able to show some character that sets them apart from everyone else. Humans relate to humans, not robots or cookie cutter personas.

  3. Positioning: How you position yourself on the market along with the strategy around that will place you miles above everyone else who doesn't have a clue. Are you a hard-working marketing graduate with 1st class honours who can learn quickly in any job? Or are you a skilled marketing graduate who has a passion for social media and online lead generation?

See? That wasn't so hard.
