When I write a client's resume, my goal is to transform it so that it exponentially increases their odds of being invited to interview for their target job. How? By focusing on results over responsibilities. Responsibilities are your job description. Every worker has one. But results show you did more than simply warm your desk chair.
Here are four ways I help my clients feature results that make their resume stand out from the rest:
1. Use numbers and metrics
Quantify your achievements and highlight specific numbers, percentages, or other measurable results.
2. Include concrete examples
Give specific examples of projects or initiatives where you achieved tangible results. Use the STAR format: What was the situation (context), what was the task (challenge), what action did you take. That's STA... R is next.
3. Highlight the impact
Explain how your actions produced tangible benefits for the company or organization. (That's the R of STAR: Results.)
4. Use action verbs
Use strong action verbs to describe your accomplishments and make them more impactful.
