When I first set up ConvertKit, I wasn't sure where to begin.
There were so many different features to explore, and all of them seemed equally important. I stumbled around figuring out what I was doing. And I got it eventually, even though it took longer than I wanted.
Here are the first three things to set up if you want to kickstart your email list.
Step #1: Create your welcome sequence
This is a series of automated emails that welcome new subscribers onto your list:
Build relationships with your new subscribers by introducing yourself further and sharing your story.
Set expectations and create excitement about what they'll experience being on your email list.
Present a paid offer to convert them to customers.
Step #2: Create a high-value opt-in to attract new subscribers.
Once your welcome sequence is set up, it's time to fill it with new subscribers:
Identify an existing piece of high-performing content (like a viral social post) and repackage it as a lead magnet (e.g., PDF how-to guide).
Create a landing page in ConvertKit where people can opt in to receive your new lead magnet (make sure to set up an automation so that new subscribers are added to your welcome sequence).
Share the landing page on your social profile to drive traffic (also add it in your bio!).
Step #3: Set up segmentation from the get-go.
There are just 3 segments you need to get started:
Lead Magnet Opt-Ins: People who've opted into your lead magnet.
Customers: People who've purchased from you.
Engaged Fans: People who consistently engage with your emails.
Over time, you'll notice some overlap as new subscribers become customers and become more engaged.
