How to Ruin a Perfectly Good Weekend

I had a coworker (let’s call him Dan) who dreaded Fridays (the day, not the restaurant).

Dan designed applications with constantly changing requirements. His work accrued all week, interrupted by meetings and break-fix emergencies, till he ended up with a mountain of tasks to finish before the weekend.

To be clear, Dan didn’t have to work weekends.

He just didn’t like the open loops, the resumption of half-finished tasks on Monday, the distraction it caused him all weekend, the worry that goalposts would change again before they’d finished.

Meanwhile, I LOVED Fridays — or rather the promised potential of a weekend, where anticipation and possibility were highest but the need to choose between tasks (and reject others) hadn’t yet occurred.

But by Sunday evening, my mood had shifted — most often toward disappointment or anxiety.

Sunday Scaries, yes, but also disappointment in myself for the choices I’d made that weekend. A disconnect between the expectations I had on Friday and the outcomes I found on Sunday night.

My problem and Dan’s were mirror images. While he struggled to value the weekend as a much needed break, I overloaded it with unrealistic expectations it could never fulfill.

Over time, I’ve found 4 principles that help me avoid these problems. They might just work for you as well.

4 Keys to Satisfying Weekends

1) Work: Fill the Gap

What? Work on the weekend?! Yes — but not on your day job.

Rest is not the opposite of work. It begins with feeling able to rest, which often requires clearing your mind of nagging tasks, or at least addressing the sense of progress that most of us yearn for.

Spending a few hours on a personal project, hobby, or errand you haven’t had time for lets you claim a victory and feel more at ease the rest of the weekend. And it prevents you from arriving at Sunday night feeling like you procrastinated or missed an opportunity to further your goals.

Examples

I reserve Saturday mornings to write, further my top project, and exercise. I do these things during the week, but always in abbreviated sessions at the day’s bookends.
Saturday morning gives me a chance to dig in and make the progress I’ve been yearning for all week.

2) Play: People Over Escape

Research consistently shows that relationships are the single greatest contributor to happiness and well-being. What better way to spend our discretionary time than with the people we care about — or finding more of them?

While it’s tempting to lose yourself in TV or videogames after a stressful week, the dopamine hangover that ensues often leaves you feeling worse than when you started — especially at the cost of more meaningful alternatives like spend time with loved ones or meeting new people.

This doesn’t mean abandoning solo activities entirely. Instead, try to schedule social interactions first. Or share your favorite solo activities with others.

Examples

Take your partner, parent, child, or friend to brunch.
Turn a solo gaming session into online co-op with a person you know, or an in-person tabletop with friends — and catch up on things other than the game!
Before you turn on the TV, call a family member or friend to catch up. Setting plans even for a couple weeks out can bolster your connection and give you both something to look forward to.
Switch from watching a movie or sports game alone to hosting a watch party. This works especially well for movies everyone’s already seen, so you can talk while watching.

3) Rest: Consistency & Power Naps

Many of us use weekends to “catch up” on sleep by sleeping in late.

Unfortunately, our bodies don’t understand the concept of weekdays vs weekends, and changing our sleep schedule messes with our circadian rhythms, leaving us more tired when Monday rolls in.

It’s better to maintain a consistent schedule, waking up within an hour of the same time we usually do on weekdays.

Examples

When I need extra sleep on weekends, these two options work better than sleeping in:

Going to bed early — More sleep overall while still waking up at my usual time. It also encourages exercise and better sleep hygiene (no late-night screens, no alcohol, etc.) to get help fall asleep early.
Taking afternoon naps — A short 25-minute nap aligns with the body’s natural rhythms and can significantly boost your mood, energy, and focus for the rest of the day, plus improve health over time.

If, like me, you struggle to fall asleep quickly, don’t beat yourself up or stress over actually nodding off. Even 20 minutes of quiet stillness or meditation (think simple breathwork or body scans) makes a huge difference.

4) Organize: Clean Space, Clear Mind

As the work week progresses, entropy does too.

Our workspaces clutter. Homes get messy, errands accrue, and to-do lists overflow. We’re left with a nagging background noise that leaves us like Dan, unable to fully enjoy our time off or concentrate to get things done.

Clearing physical and mental clutter each weekend helps hit the reset button. It makes the weekend feel more productive and satisfying while also empowering us for the week to come.

Examples

Set aside time each weekend for tidying and organizing. You can put these tasks on autopilot by creating one or more checklists, such as A/B lists for work that occurs every other week, monthly, or seasonally. I use this time to catch up on podcasts or audiobooks, usually on Sunday morning or evening before/after social events.
End-of-week reviews are popular, but also prone to becoming time sinks. Consider a short review supplemented by a midweek review.

These four principles — Work, Play, Rest, and Organize — can help transform weekends from a source of stress or disappointment into a balanced, refreshing weekly reset.

Remember, the goal isn’t to pack your weekend with activities, but to create space for the things that matter when your schedule is most flexible.
