How to differentiate yourself as an illustrator.
10 reasons a client will choose you:
If there's no obvious difference between you and another artist, the client can simply pick the lowest price.
1. Having the lowest prices is a way to differentiate yourself, but i wouldn't recommend it.
2. Being the most expensive illustrator also differentiates you, but you need to have the skills and experience to back it up.
3. Your level of professionalism. There's a lot of half-assing in the creative industries. Bring your best self to every interaction with a client.
4. Your knowledge of your subject. If you know more about your niche than the clients who need your skills, you are a valuable partner for them.
5. A large social following can help you stand out, but it's not easy to get there.
6. An impressive client list also looks great, but that's gonna take some time.
7. If you have a specialised skillset that no one else does, you are in your own category. If the client wants these skills, they come to you.
8. A unique style. If your style looks like 100 other illustrators, you have more competition. If it's unique, you have a lot less.
9. Great communication skills. If you ask thoughtful questions, and provide useful solutions to your client, you are more valuable to them.
10. Sharing your personality and values. These things are unique to you. When you share your individuality, you won't be the right fit for every client, but you'll be the perfect fit for the right clients.
In regular jobs, you've got to fit in.
In the creative industries you have to stand out.
