My most remembered TV show, "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis."
Teenagers in hot pursuit, or at lease looking for the love of their lives drew me in. I watched, curious to know what love looks like.
Dobie going for the girl of his life Thalia Menninger. Unobtainable of course. In love with love, Dobie tries to connect with many other girls as the series unfolds. All the while being pursued by "plane jane" super intelligent, Zelda Gilroy who was unconditionally in love with him. Life lesson right there.
Not what got me. Each episode began with the camera on a statue of Rodin’s, "The Thinker."
Panning to the left Dobie in pensive thought mimics the sculpture. Looking up, turning his gaze toward the camera. He asks, "What's the meaning of life, why are we here, wither are we drifting?"
I found, looking back, my first mentor. He taught me to ask questions. I Doubled down in college. Philosophy 101. Socratic Method. Socrates had opinions about the answers. He taught others to come around to his view by asking questions.
Every time I watched the show or saw the sculpture it reminded to ask questions, to think, and seek for answers so I could be wise like Dobie and Socrates. :-)
Life lesson
Ask tuff questions. Be curious about how to "live" life. Find the answers. Question the answers. Question everything. Hold fast to what is useful.
Ask why if...questions to bring people around to your point of view or better yet learn what you don't know from them.
