This One, Simple Constraint Made Me a Better Creator and Way Happier Person

Late last year, I had a brilliant idea that changed my life for the better.

It was Sunday evening, chilly outside, and all I wanted to do was snuggle up next to my girlfriend on the couch and watch a show together. There was just one problem  —  I hadn't even started drafting my Sunday newsletter.

Every week, I dreaded that damn newsletter.

As if working 40+ hours during the week at an engineering job wasn't taxing enough, I felt the "hustle porn" urge to keep producing over the weekend.

"I'll fall behind and never reach my goals if I don't put in the extra work," is what I told myself.

But at what cost? Because I always planned to work over the weekend, I just felt miserable and guilty until I actually did the work. And even then, I could never do enough. It was a brutal cycle.

On that one particular Sunday though, I reached my tipping point. I decided "fuck the newsletter" I'm going to enjoy this night and not feel guilty about it. And that's exactly what I did. It was glorious. I loved it, my girlfriend loved it, and no one on my email list even cared. The next day I shot out an email saying I was officially moving my newsletter to Mondays and swore off working on the weekends.

Setting that constraint changed the game for me

Since I've barred working weekends, I prioritize and accomplish way more in less time during the week. I have so much more energy and enthusiasm pouring into my work. I'm firing on all cylinders. Plus, I look forward to the weekends again.

Many of you fellow creators love to work through the weekend, but it may be time to ask yourself whether it's actually helping or hurting you in the long run. Rest is important as hell. Without it, you lose enthusiasm, you fizzle, you burn out 🔥.

Give yourself the gift of your weekends to rest, recover, and just fucking enjoy life again. I did, and it made me a better creator and a far happier person.
