The case for boredom in 2023. And fewer podcasts.
In the modern world, we are constantly surrounded by noise, stimulation, FOMO, and entertainment. As a result, we find ourselves filled with an intense need for stimulation and a fear of wasting time. However, embracing boredom is a powerful life hack for creativity and productivity.
According to a study by the University of Central Lancashire in the UK, boredom is essential to creative thinking. During these moments of boredom, the brain is freed from distractions and can explore new and innovative ideas without outside influence. Think how many ideas have come to you in the shower. The study found that when people are bored, they are more likely to be creative and find unique solutions to problems.
The same study also found that boredom can increase productivity and focus. When we are bored, our minds become more alert and focused. A meditative calmness ensues and opens up space in our thinking. I prefer to call it a restful state. The word bored or boring feels too negative.
For me, I changed up an element of my routine. My dog walks. In the past, I used these walks to catch up on podcasts. And let's be clear. I love podcasts.
However, your brain churns and burns calories while engaging in this medium. I wanted space for my brain to escape and recharge, which doesn't happen at home with two little wild boys and a high-energy dog. So my walks now are sans podcast. And I attempt to spend this time observing and noticing details in the physical world. Sounds cheesy. I get it.
Further, I try to look up more. This is ironic since I discovered the 'look up' recommendation while listening to a podcast. When I look up, I appreciate the different levels of surroundings that I never notice. This exercise relaxes me, and I feel a sense of well-being and improvement in my posture (think about how often we look down). Also, a little Vitamin D jolt from morning sunshine on the face never hurts. Don't knock it until you try it.
In the age of constant chaos, embracing boredom can be an effective means of creativity, productivity, and well-being. IMO, leveling up your boredom game is a good use of time and may even improve your health.
