1. "I try to find excellence, buy excellence, and add to excellence over time. I sell mediocrity. That's how I invest." - David Gardner

When the market makes big moves in either direction, it's easy to get distracted and lose track of the big picture. Buying quality companies allows you to think bigger. You become less concerned with stock price movements and focus on the future, 5-10 years down the road. Example: Netflix $NFLX

2. "The only real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes." Marcel Proust (though Proust never actually wrote that, in French or English).

When you become an adult, you are responsible for your education. Be curious, try new things, read, ask questions, etc. You are in control of what your eyes see. Continually seek to grow, and you will continue to see things with new eyes.

3. "I think they should wait for a warm morning and shoot off the next one." - Chuck Yeager

Yeager is referring to the shuttle program after the Challenger exploded when cold temperatures caused a gasket to fail. They shut the program down for three years.

Sometimes we focus too much on failure. The innovators are the ones who continue to persist despite their failures.

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence." - Calvin Coolidge

4. "Culture is defined by who you hire, fire, and promote." -Sam Altman

Ultimately, it's the people that determine the culture. How they act and what they do on a daily basis help shape the culture. The people you hire, fire, and promote will help to form the bedrock of your culture.

5. "I had rather have a Fool to make me merry than experience to make me sad." - Shakespeare (As You Like It)

"Having fun whether the markets doing well or not is a really important character test. As Coolidge reminds us, persistence of good cheer and humor through all situations is a real mark of character." - DG

It's important to have a community to encourage you and even laugh together when things aren't going the way we want. I'm grateful for the Motley Fool community, which serves as a reminder to persist with my long-term goals and have fun along the way.
