Principles of a Rule Breaker Portfolio: Principle #1 Make Your Portfolio Reflect Your Best Vision For Our Future

"Make your portfolio reflect your best vision for our future. Always be thinking ahead, be optimistic, think about the world that you want to create. Because sure enough, your dollars and mine, our capital, is helping shape the world. Truly we are shaping the world every day with our financial decisions. And the future matters so very deeply."

This is a great quote from David. Let's break it into 3 parts.

  1. "Always be thinking ahead, be optimistic, think about the world that you want to create."

The keyword here is "YOU." This principle allows you to be creative with your portfolio. Think about the world you want to create and invest accordingly.

This helps you eliminate short-term thinking. You can focus on the business and its mission instead of the stock.

  1. "Because sure enough, your dollars and mine, our capital, is helping shape the world."

It's true. Many will try to convince you that your dollars are insignificant to the businesses you own. But as a shareholder, you've become a part-owner. The company you own should positively contribute to a future you can envision.

Own companies that focus on improving the lives of all stakeholders and whose ownership gives you a sense of pride.

  1. "Truly, we are shaping the world every day with our financial decisions. And the future matters so very deeply."

What you do with your capital profoundly impacts the future. It also announces to the world what you deem important. When you understand this truth, it places more value on each dollar.

Understanding that a dollar today represents multiples dollars in the future helps you grasp the responsibility of investing each dollar appropriately.
