Playing the long health game

Do you want a trick to burn calories without exercising? Think about making it N.E.A.T

What do you think is the best way to burn calories?

What are the things that come immediately to mind?

Common things are:

  • Cardio -- running, rowing, or biking

  • Strength training -- weights or kettlebells

But there’s one big component that gets overlooked. And it's a component that is easy to adjust, doesn’t take any extra time, and just needs a bit of environmental design.

That’s NEAT!

N.E.A.T. stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis

(A very fancy way of saying 'energy spent when not exercising')

The most famous example here is the standing desk.

Since you can only exercise for a limited time each day, most of your day is actually spent doing things other than exercise.

Can you creatively find spaces there where you can hack in a bit of extra movement?

One trick: Play with the Technology ↔ Movement exchange

Think about how technology doesn’t just save you time, it saves you movement:

  • The food delivery lets you stay seated longer

  • Your Roomba does the chores for you so you move less

All technology is a movement saver in some way.

Are there places in your life where you can use less tech to move more and increase your N.E.A.T?
