Maybe it’s the byproduct of living in a pandemic, but it feels like everyone is in therapy these days. I’m no exception.
I’ve taken therapy off and on for years. More recently, I started again at the end of 2020 after the isolation of Covid times had taken too much of a toll.
Meditation and yoga definitely helps me liberate heavy emotions, but talking usually offers me the greatest release. I'm a communicator by nature, so, it makes sense.
It's why I discovered my self-therapy secret weapon one afternoon as I was sitting alone on a park bench.
I had recently gotten into a huge argument with a sibling. A really, really bad one... like we were kids again. The fight left me a wreck. I needed to work out what I was feeling and why, to figure out what I needed to let go.
My next therapy appointment was almost two weeks away.
So, I decided to talk to myself -- and record it on my phone.
I opened the voice memo app, and started talking. Saying the words out loud instead of leaving them trapped in my head was freeing. Recording it felt like I was talking to someone else.
The self-analysis of the situation was so helpful that I've made this a reoccurring practice.
I highly recommend it. Maybe you're like me and using your voice to deal with emotions will be positively impactful. Give it a try, and let me know if it works for you too.
