When I was learning how to be a creator, I tried to learn and do everything all at once.
I tried to build an Instagram audience, learn how to blog, and make YouTube videos. I realized this was unsustainable. So I dropped everything and decided to focus on writing. A year later, I managed to build an audience on Medium and Twitter and made over $10K+ in my first year as a freelance writer.
Here are some tips on how you can focus on your passion project.
1. Before saying 'yes' to a project, ask yourself this important question
Why do I want to start this new project? I decided to solely focus on writing because it gave me more joy than creating videos. Writing was hard, but it was fun. YouTube was hard and wasn't fun. I decided that I wanted to learn how to move others with words.
By knowing why exactly you want to start a project, you're more likely to stick with it.
2. Decide how long you'll spend time on your project
I gave myself the permission to learn, fail or succeed with writing for a year.
Currently, my goal is not to give up on YouTube for at least two years. This allows me to focus on YouTube alone. I show up on other platforms, but I have no intention of growing on them as I do with YouTube.
By setting this constraint, you learn how to show up intentionally.
3. Passion project first, lifestyle second
Once you commit to your project, you learn how to adjust your lifestyle around it.
When I focused on writing, I made sure that it was the first thing I did in the morning. So I created a routine or a habit that supported my passion project. When I traveled with friends, I made sure that I wrote too.
Once you prioritize your passion project, you unexpectedly get the results you want.
