Being Too Nice - Over the years I remember:
Obsessing over every single word in an email that it takes me 5x as long as it should to write it;
Not speaking up to challenge ideas I was against;
Being afraid to give a hard no when it was required;
To be seen as a strong leader you need to be decisive and hold your viewpoint with conviction. Being a "yes" person all of the time will never earn you that respect.
Waiting For The Invitation - When you're the expert who is building, creating, and organizing the magic behind the scenes you tend to become the best kept secret at work. You need to advocate for your own visibility. Schedule coffee chats with other teams, join their Slack channels, offer to deliver a presentation. Get some face time so they can get to know, like, and trust you.
Downplaying Their Achievements - One of the best things I ever did for myself was to record my work achievements, learnings, and results each week. Send a list of what you've accomplished this week to your manager. They are too busy to remember to check in on every little thing so they will appreciate it. It will make their job easier while reminding them of how awesome you are.
What else would you add to this list?
