I'm a sleight-of-hand artist and magician. I believe each of us has magic inside of us and we should use that magic for the good of others.

YouTube vs. LinkedIn?
Jimi Gibson

Over the last week, I conducted a non-scientific survey.

Here was the question I posed:

"If you had to limit your consumption of content to 1 channel for 6 months. Which 1 of these 4 would you choose?"

  • LinkedIn

  • YouTube

  • Twitter

  • Instagram

The Results Were:

  • LinkedIn = 27%

  • YouTube = 50%

  • Twitter = 5%

  • Instagram = 18%

Analyzing the results and deciding which platform is right for you, here are some statistics from a SproutSocial report.

LinkedIn demographics and usage

  • Number of monthly active users: 810 million

  • Largest age group: 25-34 (58.4%)

  • Gender: 48% female, 52% male

  • 63% of LinkedIn users access the network weekly, and 22% daily

According to LinkedIn themselves, it’s the top-rated social network for lead generation, making it a great source for B2B marketers looking to find targeted and motivated audiences for their campaigns.

YouTube demographics and usage

  • Number of monthly active users: 2+ billion

  • Largest age group: 15-35 (highest reach)

  • Gender: 46% female, 54% male

  • Time spent per session: ~30 minutes

The majority of users claim to use YouTube for entertainment rather than to find brands and products. Brands still have a lot of work to do on the platform, finding a balance between entertainment and advertising.

How do you decide?

LinkedIn

LinkedIn is primary a text-based platform that is moving into supporting creators. Graphics, selfies, and carousels perform well. Video? Not so much.

Content on LinkedIn has a shelf life based on engagement and feed settings. There are fewer users compared to YouTube but the audience is saturated with decision makers. Creators on the platform skew 3.5% to 96.5% readers. There is a huge opportunity for creators. Think YouTube in the early days. Organic reach is still possible.

YouTube

YouTube is the second largest search engine, next to their owner-Google. The platform is dominated by video, while audio content is available. Viewership and audiences on each video can grow over time, unlike LinkedIn. The active user count is impressive. Competition is real.
