If you're a beginner and you want to get better at producing video content - don't buy any new video gear. No new cameras, no new microphones - nothing.
Think of the greatest Video Creators in the game now - Ali Abdaal, Mr. Beast, GaryVee - have you ever heard them say, "I couldn't have reached 1 Million subscribers if it wasn't for my Sony A7S 4 or my Shure SM7b mic"?
Of course not! You as a noobie video creator get tricked into thinking that you just need a better camera in order to reach the next level. It's the darkest form of procrastination. You're saying to yourself - I'm not good enough and I need a piece of metal and plastic to help me BE good enough.
And so many video noobies make this same mistake.
ā They browse B&H Photo and Amazon endlessly
ā They watch hundreds of hours of camera reviews on YouTube
ā They diagram and measure out their new studio
As a noobie writer, leading up to Ship30... I made this same mistake.
The week leading up to Ship30, I was on Amazon searching away for a new keyboard. A keyboard! I was comparing the specs and which color key switch was best for typing. After a collective 10 hours, I eventually got analysis paralysis, closed Amazon and never got a keyboard. I wasted 10 hours trying to learn how to get better at a new medium without actually putting in the work.
Here's what you do with those 10, 20, 100 hours you're about to waste:
Publish a metric f**k ton of videos.
Those 10 hours I wasted watching keyboard reviews, I could have written 10 atomic essays. I could have written 10 Twitter threads.
In that time you spent on B&H, you could have recorded your first intro video, welcoming your new fans to your YouTube channel.
You could've practiced being on-camera.
You could've practiced editing videos for the first time.
You could've gained your first 10 subscribers on YouTube or TikTok.
When you're browsing, you're sitting on the sidelines. You're stuck picking out the "right" tennis shoe, when you should be on the field playing.
