A Mental Health Trifecta

We only have so much time, and because of this, we often neglect our mental health.

Imagine a hack that could help the body, mind and spirt all at the same time. I think I have found it. It is a combination of three practices: walking, metta meditation, and binaural beats.

Let's see how it works.

Walking: 

The health benefits of walking are numerous.

When we walk, things that we are rushing to or from, or other random thoughts, often distract us. By walking intentionally, we can focus on the environment, noticing the world, as well as any physical sensations. When we catch ourselves caught up in extraneous thoughts, we can see those thoughts dissipate and refocus on the world around us; clearing our minds of those things that disrupt our natural state of equilibrium.

Metta Meditation:

Loving-Kindness Meditation is another name for this practice.

It involves developing feelings of warmth, goodwill, and kindness toward other people and yourself. While meditating, you bring up the images of these people and silently repeat phases that express loving feelings, such as "May you be happy.", "May you be free from pain.", or "May you experience joy." You can combine this with walking by silently sending these messages and feelings to all the people you encounter on your walk.

Binaural Beats: 

These require headphones or earbuds.

It is believed that listening to these beats helps brainwaves vibrate at various frequencies that occur naturally during certain mental states. Here, the best frequencies might be those in the Theta band (4 -7 Hertz). Theta waves can induce the feeling of tranquility, making it easier to develop feelings of loving-kindness, compassion, and goodwill.
