We all have role models, whether or not we know who they are.
I used to have a class where I had students figure out the qualities that they admire and create a heraldic crest, with multiple symbols, each representing some aspect they wanted within themselves.
Sometimes, my students tried to use famous icons, such as Nike or Apple. To help prevent this, I showed how my personal symbol could represent Batman, and explained how I couldn't appropriate his symbol. I needed to create my own, and so should they.
Here is how Batman was my role model as a teacher.
Discipline
Batman sees when people are harming others and puts a stop to it.
Discipline doesn't specifically mean punishment here, though it might. Batman's goal isn't to punish perpetrators, it is more farsighted than that. He wants to correct their actions so they can learn to control themselves. This should be the goal of all teachers.
Perseverance
Batman faces many obstacles in his fight against crime to bring about justice.
Teachers, too, must persist in helping their students to overcome academic and personal challenges. Like Batman, teachers use their intelligence and resourcefulness to engage their students, helping them too to break through the barriers that are holding them back.
Mentorship
Batman helped mentor Robin, who eventually took on the mantle of Nightwing.
Like Batman, excellent teachers act as mentors to their students, guiding them on their educational journey. Helping them to navigate their way to becoming outstanding citizens and adults. It isn't a role to take lightly, nor is it easy, as your impact as a teacher affects the very fabric of civilization and what it means to be a good human being.
I hope you will find out what is important to you and give yourself a way to keep these ideals in mind as you go about your work.
It might be a fun exercise to create your own modern heraldic crest. Enjoy it!
