Growing up, I was always told to finish all the food on my plate.

I remember hearing, "There are starving kids in China." Then, I came to China, and it blew me away. They ate the food they put on their plates, but the amount of uneaten food left on the table was unbelievable.

We are told to eat well, but here are some benefits of not eating for 36-hours.

Digestive health

Not eating allows the digestive system to rest and repair.

Your gut has a community of micro-organisms. Over time, things can get out of whack, resulting in bloating, indigestion, and discomfort. Fasting is like a public holiday for your gut, that can help create a balanced and diverse digestive community, leading to improved immune function and mental health.

Autophagy

Autophagy is just a fancy way of saying, the recycling and removal of damaged and unused cellular components.

Remember when you were a kid and turned in a bunch of bottles and cans? It felt great to get that money and use it to buy other things. Fasting helps your body do the same thing; it gets rid of things that are not being used and produces more things that are.

Not eating forces the body to tap into its reserves to sustain itself.

It is an unfortunate fact that being overweight can lead to all kinds of health problems. Fasting forces the body to use the extra fat that it has to maintain its energy levels. Fortunately, if you are overweight, using this extra fat reduces other health risks.
