Walking in the Dark - The Benefits
Joshua Hockaday

There is something magical about darkness.

Sometimes, when I wake up in the middle of the night, or very early in the morning when the sun has yet to rise, I decide it's time to take a walk. It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, it is a special treat.

Here are some benefits I have found:

Empty:

There are fewer people.

During the day, we all go bustling about our business; the streets and sidewalks are packed with cars, people, and pets. In the dark, there are fewer of these things, and it seems calmer and more relaxing.

Quiet:

There is less noise, and sometimes even silence.

People are asleep, or on their way to being so. Many businesses are closed. There are fewer cars. With this comes less noise and a greater sense of peace. Interestingly, as the darkness decreases my ability to see, I hear more; so the world is quieter, and yet, I can hear the subtle sounds that I would otherwise miss.

Awareness:

Lower-light conditions mean I need to pay attention more.

The world isn't as I normally see it; it is a bit more mysterious and odd. Distances seem off, the cracks in the sidewalk, or the height of a curb appear distorted, and another level of spatial awareness is needed. This brings me more into the present and I think less about other things.

A conscious walk in the dark may just be the thing you need.

You don't have to go alone, bring a friend and enjoy it together.
