Comparative Analysis: Traditional Learning vs Brain-Friendly Learning.
Jean-Paul Bayley

What are the key differences between Traditional Learning and Brain-Friendly Learning?

In Traditional Learning, the trainer is the focus:

  • the classroom is set up in rows facing the trainer.

  • the trainer introduces themselves at length to establish credibility.

  • the trainer tells learners what they will be getting from the class.

  • the trainer does most of the moving.

  • the trainer does most of the talking.

  • the trainer presents from a slide-deck with a corporate theme.

  • the only breaks in content delivery are for coffee, lunch, or to answer questions.

In Brain-Friendly Learning, learners are the focus:

  • the classroom is set up in cabaret tables for learner collaboration.

  • learners connect to each other in pairs or small groups.

  • learners decide what their most important take-aways from the class will be.

  • learners do most of the moving.

  • learners do most of the talking.

  • learners consume content from a variety of sources, such as workbooks, posters, cards, and the internet.

  • regular breaks for multi-sensory reviews allow learners to process their new learning.

There's one simple change you can make. A change that will significantly improve the effectiveness of your training. What is it?

Focus on the learners’ needs over you own.

When you focus on the learner's needs rather your own, you create an environment where effective learning follows.
