Do not use your face ID on your phone.

In recent times, we have been working very hard to make things easier and faster to execute.

One place where we see this is on and how we access our phones.

We have moved from typing in a password, to now having to just draw a pattern, use our fingerprint or just look at the phone, and via face id, it opens.

Each of these latter options is faster and easier means to access our phones, compared to typing in a password. The pattern is faster than password typing, the fingerprint faster than the pattern, and the face id even faster or easier. With regards to the face id and the fingerprint, one can argue that either is faster depending on the individual using it. But both are fast and easier to use.

As a result of that, many people are resorting to using either face IDs or fingerprints as options to unlock their phones. This is where the danger lies.

About passwords, first of all, the main reason we lock our phones is to prevent unauthorized access. From the government, friends, spouses, enemies, and children to name a few.

For the above reason, passwords must be difficult to have access to on one hand and secondly difficult to guess or crack. A password or your phone locking system,, therefore has to do three things. It should not be easily known, it should not be easy to access and it should not be easy to crack.

Now, this is the interesting part, of all the options available to lock our phones, the easiest and fastest, that is the face and finger IDs are also the easiest to allow access to anyone.

At this point, we need to establish that, accessing your password comes in two main forms. The first is via phone itself and the second is via you the person.

In the first instance, someone can get your passwords or lock systems either through hacking your phone, the server on which your password is stored or through sites and organizations where you have used your passwords. Within this spectrum, we can say all the various lock systems are on the same level when it comes to accessing your phone without your permission

It is in the second scenario, that is from your person that we begin to see the differences in the various locking systems' abilities to protect your phone.

When it comes to getting the key to your phone from your person, the easiest is through the people who use face IDs or fingerprints to lock their phones.

This is because all one has to do to open your phone is to get you to look at it, or touch it, and voila they have access to your data. In the first instance you may say, it is difficult to get you to unwillingly give your thumbprint or face, but you have to just pause and think to realize that your face is the most open secret and your print is also the most open secret out there. None of it is hidden. We do not need to crack a code, go through some barriers or think too much to see your face or your print. You use them every single day in public.

Then again, as confident as you are in your ability to resist someone forcing your finger onto your phone, or your face to your phone, you just need to fall asleep and the deed is done. If for nothing at all, I am sure each day, give and take, four hours out of the twenty-four hours you are asleep. And I can also bet some of you sleep deeper than the dead. Not to mention some of us who sleep at meeting work, or after drinking just three glasses of beer. At that point, anyone close to you or having physical access to your phone can open it easily if you use your face or fingerprint lock systems. Now then, woe to them whose unauthorized are also their bed partners. So, for all you know, your phone that you believe is as secured as fort Knox is a free park.

Also, remember that you can be rendered unconscious by force or be physically restrained. If that is to happen to you, and your key to your phone is your face or fingerprint, then you can be sure that your secure phone is open sesame. Once they can hold you down, even briefly, that's all they need. Your face and finger are theirs to use. That easy.

You may say you sleep light, hardly have gotten drunk and, never imagine a situation where you will be physically restrained, so you are safe with your face id or fingerprint. I have news for you.

Have you noticed in our era that, most organizations and governments are busy collecting your fingerprints and face IDs? And you are also gladly and happily dishing it out to them just so that you can access that services, privilege, or location?

Pause for a moment and think about it. What you are freely doing is, giving your key to your phone to the governments and all those organizations. Any place that has demanded and stored your fingerprints or used face ID as the pass to enter has your key in their system.

If then, I have that database of your face and fingerprint, you should then imagine that, if I come in contact with your phone, I can easily open it without needing you to be physically around. At this point imagine all the places and people who may have your face id and fingerprints. It is almost like key loggers malware that people use to steal your password or your keystrokes. The only difference here is that, unlike key loggers malware that is usually installed illegally, you are freely and happily giving away your key to your phone. And as you may know, the government has never been your friend.

The last thing I will like to draw your attention to about why it is dangerous to use face ID especially is related to our lifestyle on social media. Many of us have our faces plastered all over social media. So much so that, one does not even need to see us physically to be able to generate our face ID key. Just by our pictures on our status, posts, etc, they can get the key to your phone.

The above are some of the reasons why I will recommend that you ditch face ID or fingerprint where possible, and go with the option of a typed password. Yes, I know it's faster and easier that way to access your phone on the go, but as I have shared with you, it is also that easy for that other person to open it.

Use text passwords. With that at least, unless the person can read your mind it is most challenging to get it from you, even if you are asleep or they have you in custody. Unless you talk in your sleep or can not stand the torture.

Having said all the above, we need to also remember that, as good as it is to have a text password as your lock system, do remember that in case of an emergency where you cannot speak, type, or are unconscious, there is no way a third party can access your phone to call for help.

The question though is, how many secrets do you have, and are you that important that someone will be interested in what you possess on your phone?
