In this essay, I will present a method to evaluate statements like:

I would like to X

where X is something:

  • that will significantly change your current life, like moving to another country, starting your own business, or completely changing your career path

  • you think you would like to have/ achieve/ be

  • you have never had/ achieved/ been before.

Remember! Our view about the outcome of X is not complete because it is unknown and new for us. So ...
The actual consequences of X might be a negative shock!

Time & energy & money investment, sacrificing other areas of life, or even flipping it entirely might have outstanding results or be a painful lesson and disappointment.

Here is how you can analyze them more in-depth before it is too late.

Step 1: Write down what exactly you want to achieve and why!

I want to have/ achieve/ be X because of A, B & C.

Step 2: Try to imagine other aspects of having/achieving/ being X
by writing down answers to the following questions

  • How does a person's life that has got/ achieved/ is X look like?

  • What are other consequences of having/ reaching/ being X?

  • What is the required effort to keep/ sustain/ stay X?

Step 3: You know more or less what how to eat, having/ being/ achieving X. Write down answers to gap-related questions:

  • What does need to be changed in your life? Is it doable and acceptable? Would you enjoy it?

  • What do you need to sacrifice? How do you feel about it?

Step 4: Answer the question loudly:

Is effort required to have/ achieve/ be X
because of A, B & C
considering complete picture from step 2
and all considerations from step 3
Worth making? Now?

Step 5: 🟩 Execute / 🟨 Postpone / 🟥 Deny
