Most successful people share the same handful of things in common:
They know how to stay focused on one goal at a time
They have mastered one (or multiple) valuable skills
Etc.
But in Technology Consulting in particular, I have noticed that the most successful people have this 1 habit in common:
Starting With The 'Why'
And here's why:
The most important job of a consultant is finding the right problem to solve. Often times, a customer "thinks" they know the problem, but they completely miss the point. This is where the consultant plays the role of a trusted advisor, shows the mirror, and starts to peel the onion. Once enough layers of the onion have come off, the customer is surprised to find what lies inside.
Once the problem has been identified, it's time to "make the kill" - i.e.- provide solutions. As I often say, "It doesn't matter what you build if you don't solve the right problem."
