đź’ˇ Interesting new study out of Oregon State University and Texas A&M on how table height affects low-back and shoulder loads (during Dungeness crab sorting).
Researchers found a trade-off:
• Increasing table height reduced trunk flexion & lower-back moments
• But it also increased shoulder flexion moments & upper trapezius activity.
Interestingly, table height didn’t significantly change perceived exertion or discomfort.
⚖️ So, while raising the table reduced biomechanical load on the low back, it came at the cost of greater shoulder strain.
This kind of trade-off highlights why ergonomics needs a holistic approach—considering risks across the whole body, not just one joint or task.
