Essential eCommerce email sequences (part 8 of 10): Cross-sell/Upsell
Kat Garcia

This is the sequence to help your customer make the most out of the product they bought from you AND for you to make more sales from each customer.

This is also your chance to ask for a review.

Your best customer is your existing customer.

Why a cross-sell/upsell sequence?

This is an opportunity to recommend complementary products (or higher-priced versions) to what your customer has already bought.

For example, if you're selling plants, a great cross-sell would be fertilizers, soil, etc. If you're selling consumables, an upsell would be a subscription.

What you'll need

Email Template

Use a similar template for all emails so it's cohesive.

Use Dynamic blocks to show past purchases: Dynamic Blocks Guide.

Coupon

Use a static coupon. Guide here.

Trigger

Trigger: X Days after Fulfilled Order - depends on how long it takes for the customer to enjoy your product. Test and/or run a survey. Start with 7 days while waiting for data.

Filter: Filter out refunds, placed order past 7 days since start of flow.

Additional filter: You'll need to create separate or dynamic emails according to the past purchase. I.e., if you're selling cereal and the customer bought peanut butter flavor, make sure you have a "Peanut Butter" filter so this customer doesn't get peanut butter cereal as a recommendation.

Sample sequence emails

  • Email 1 (X Days after Fulfilled Order): Recommendations

  • Optional Review Email - Can be a flow or a separate campaign: Loving your purchase? Spread the word! Review Sample.

  • Email 2 (3 days after Email 1): Recommendations + Optional offer. Upsell Sample.
