Multi-tasking is considered to be a critical skill in today's world. Multi-tasking seems to allow us to complete more tasks in a short amount of time. However, studies have shown that multi-tasking achieves the opposite.
When we multi-task, we divide our attention between different tasks and it makes it harder for our brain to focus and fully immerse ourselves. In addition, it limits our ability to process information effectively.
As a result, we tend to make more mistakes, be less efficient and require more time to complete a task. Deep focus and attention is particularly required when we are working through complex topics.
Therefore, instead of dividing your attention between different tasks, focus your attention on one thing until you have completed it. This will improve your understanding, efficiency and quality when completing the task.
This quote by Stewart Stafford summarises it well:
“Multitasking is overrated - I'd rather do one thing well than many things badly. Quality supersedes quantity every time.”
So next time you start a task, make sure you complete it before starting a new one.
