Recently, I completed the Month to Master program led by Michael Simmons and I learned a lot from the program and the people there!

🧵 Here's what I learned and hope you learn from my learning!

Month to Master program is about learning in public. It's about "Learn & Teach". You'll learn better by teaching, and other people surrounding you will learn from you :)

First of all, learning and teaching are deeply interconnected. To learn better, you need to teach. To teach, you need to learn. Sharing and teaching deepen your understanding, and it's called the Explanation Effect, which is a method proven by numerous studies.

While you teach, you learn. I assume that you might have experienced that when you tried to teach something to someone, you'd know your blind spot, logical mistakes, etc. The Explanation Effect is similar to a concept called Feynman Technique if you're familiar.

Then, what should I do? Where to begin? Tell me the details.

This program covers from what to learn and how to learn to how to share and teach

First, what to learn?

Of course, you can learn anything you want. But remember, while most people search for in-demand skills, top learners search for rare & valuable skills. It'd be helpful for you to learn something rare and valuable in the future.

Second, how to learn?

There are some learning techniques. Especially for reading, fractal/deep reading and HAA hack might be helpful for you.

Fractal Reading is a way to understand the concept faster and better. Instead of jumping to start reading a book or taking a 20-hour course, just begin with book summaries, articles, podcasts, and TED talks. You can grasp the big picture and gain atomic understanding faster.

Then, you can decide if you really need to read the book or take the course. Thus, you can save more time and won't lose context.

Deep Reading is a slow reading (10% speed) and to deeply understand the concept. You'll take detailed notes by pulling out keywords and big ideas from other places. Re-reading sometimes helps you clarify vague points.

HAA Hack stands for Highlight, Ask, and Apply. When you read or watch something, just excerpt the important point that you resonated with. Ask why it matters, what you thought, etc. Then, think about how to apply it to other things. You'll actively learn by doing these.

By using fractal/deep reading and/or HAA hack, you'll connect the accumulated atomic understandings with each other and gain the big picture with deep understanding faster and more effectively.

Then, how to share and teach?

Writing is the first step. Writing makes you sure your learnings. But don't stop there. If you stop here, you'll be smarter a bit but it doesn't make others smarter. By sharing, others can learn from you and you'll increase your credibility.

More than anything, as in Cunningham’s Law: “The best way to get the right answer on the Internet is not to ask a question; it’s to post the wrong answer.” You'll get more feedback from smarter people by sharing. Remember, the # of perspectives = the degree of understanding.

So, I think the following is a good flow for learning something.

First, extract the important parts and take light notes to organize your thoughts by HAA hack.

Next, write down the learning as if you were explaining it to someone else.

Finally, share it on Twitter or actually teach it to someone.

By repeating this process, you will learn better, and happily, others can learn from you.

Before the end, the people you learn with are important as Ben Franklin's Junto Club, The Vagabonds, Tennis Cabinet, etc. Who you surround yourself with is important. They bring new perspectives and help you learn better.

At Month to Master, I came across so many ambitious learners from all over the world. Weekly calls with them and sharing knowledge was a really great experience! I think this is the unique selling point of this program.

To sum up, share/teach as if you learn from them, and learn as if you teach it to them. Collective learning is how humans got smarter across generations. Learning in public not only helps you learn but also other people. The doors are open for you at:
