Feeling stuck at your job? Scared to explore new fields of work? 3 ways to make that easy.

If you work a 9 to 5 job, and monotony seems to set in to a point that your mind wonders, “What am I doing with my life?” (maybe a bit extreme, but you get the point), you’re probably reaching your tipping point, and need to rethink your professional journey. This could be a sign that you just need a new challenge, or, a realisation that you were called to do something else on this planet and you just happened to settle with where you were.

I personally know how intimidating it can be to step out of that comfort zone you’ve built for yourself and explore something new, mainly because you don’t feel confident in your capabilities and knowledge of the field.

Here are 3 effective steps you can take to make this process doable and less intimidating, while still being employed:

1) Connect with experts in the field and imbibe the knowledge they provide, tried and tested methods they have used to excel in the industry. You’ll have 2 to 3x the learning from their real-life experiences than any other resource. LinkedIn provides a powerful platform to be able to make these connections. It is wise to also have a mentor who can guide you on this journey, one of these experts can become your mentor once you build a rapport with them.

2) Take up inexpensive online courses that help you hone the essential skills in the field you want to step into. There are several courses that give you an overview understanding and then a deep dive with practical case studies to learn the application of the subject matter too. Platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, and even LinkedIn learning have a vast collection of resources offered by leading universities and industry leaders themselves to guide you and prep you for your new journey.

3) Keep a lookout for internship opportunities. Just knowing the theoretical aspects and simulated cases of an industry will not get you ready to take that leap, but an internship can be a game-changer. Getting your hands dirty with the day-to-day tasks of the work you want to do in the near future gives you a different perspective altogether. While looking out for these internship opportunities, be open to exploring even unpaid, part-time internships, where you can dedicate a few hours in a day to start with. This experience will not only give you a feel of what you are getting into, but also invaluable entries on your resume.

Having the zeal to do something different and new is not everyone’s cup of tea, so for you to consider doing so itself is the first step taken with courage. The shift to a new field is not easy but is rewarding and fulfilling. It also contributes to your mental well-being allowing you to do things you love and have a passion for, with more energy, and determination.
