The (Not So) New Kids On the Block
Kevin Alexander

The early 90s were weird enough.

It was a world of tight-rolled jeans, industrial amounts of Aqua-net, and boy bands like New Kids On the Block. After all this time, you'd think those days had passed (and honestly, I never really did figure out how to comb my hair). But thanks to the nostalgia circuit, my timeline is full of teased hair and video clips from shows happening not in 1992 but today.

I remember when indeed.

My classmates--we're middle-aged now-- are taking these shows in, and they are taking their kids with them. Kids that are the same age now as we were then.

Are we old enough to have high school-aged kids? (spoiler alert: Yes. Yes, we are).

And why are these adults- who by now should know better- spending their children's college fund money seeing a group that hasn't had a hit in decades? Can Joey still hit those high notes? Which Wahlberg is up there again? (Yes, and Donnie.) Nostalgia plays a massive role in it, of course. But people like what they like, and tastes don't generally change all that much.

Not my cup of tea, but pointing and laughing would be hypocritical. After all, one of my favorite bands reunited in 2017 after almost 30 years apart, and it was one of-- if not the-- best shows I've ever seen.

High school me would've said there's no accounting for taste. Thirty years on, I'm glad NKOTB gets to perform and that my friends get to share the joy of seeing them with their kids. The teased hair? Not so much.
