4 Great Kate Bush Songs For New Fans
Kevin Alexander

Most everyone knows the story of Kate Bush's "Running up that Hill." For those that might not, the short version is this: the song was initially released in 1985, appearing on her "Hounds of Love" record.

Thirty-seven years later, it rose again to prominence after being featured in the 4th season of Stranger Things. On its first release, it went to number 3 in the UK. It charted a second time in 2012 when it was used as part of the Olympics closing ceremony that year. And this past June, it topped the charts.

No gatekeeping here; as a longtime fan, I love that so many people are finding her work for the first time. With ten studio albums, there's a lot to root through. In the meantime, I thought I'd offer up 4 of my favorites as a sort of primer.

Cloudbusting

The 2nd single off of "Hounds of Love," The song is about a man and his physicist father, who spent their days "Cloudbusting," a rain-making process. It was sampled heavily by dance group Utah Saints for their 1992 track "Something Good," which is, well, good.

Rubberband Girl

After more than three years on hiatus, Bush returned with a bang, releasing "The Red Shoes" in 1993. This is the lead single, and it is infectious.

The Big Sky

Back to Hounds of Love. The Big Sky is probably my favorite song on the record if forced to pick. It's dynamic and over the top. The video is also worth watching; Bush is also a choreographer, and this became quite a production.

The Morning Fog

One of these is not like the others. The Morning Fog is a beautiful, reflective song. A great listen on an early morning walk.
