5 Songs To Get You Into a Flow State and Keep You There
Kevin Alexander

Whether you're working on a school project, building in public. etc., everything goes better with music.

To truly get into a flow state means tuning out all other distractions. It means turning off your phone and closing tabs.

It also means turning ON some good music. Deep Work is more manageable when you have a soundtrack to do it to.

If you're like me, that flow state is more like the tides; energy comes in waves, and the music reflects that. Too low, and I check out. Too high, and the music itself becomes a distraction.

Here are 5 tracks you can use to get pulled in, sustain your energy, and transition back out:

  • Counterpart- Bonobo: a fantastic track off of 2022's excellent Fragments record. This is a great song as you're easing into work mode.

  • A Sort of Homecoming- Paul Keeley: Several years ago, I went on a 21 credit bender to finish a degree. That entire time was a blur of typing & research, but Keeley was with me every step of the way. He still is.

  • A Walk- Tycho: A staple on many lo-fi lists, I try and time this one so it hits when I'm starting to lag a little.

  • Vulnerable-Daniel Portman: Like a rocket booster. Watch your word count go up in real-time as this plays.

  • RoyGBiv: Boards of Canada: A short transitory track. I like this either at the front or back end of my lists. And the title is a mnemonic for the colors of the rainbow, so there's that.
