Vulfpeck are a funk band first formed in 2011.

The group came together after it's members met at the University of Michigan's music school. The band was formed with the idea of being a German version of the famed session musicians of the 1960's, such as the Funk Brothers or Wrecking Crew.

They quickly developed a unique sound, but soon became famous for their...silence?

In 2014, the band released their 10 track Sleepify album that was completely silent.

Opening track 'Z' certainly sets the tone, a subtle, intriguing work that teases the listener as to what may come next. It's followed by 'Zz' and 'Zzz' which continue along similar lyrical themes while staying true to Sleepify's overriding minimalist aesthetic. By the midpoint, you realise Vulfpeck are aiming to pull off the same trick as the Ramones: they may only have one song, but it's an effective one.

The plan was to take any royalties earned from the streaming, and use the funds to underwrite an admission-free tour.

Fans were asked to play it on repeat it while they slept. The scheme was a success, raising $20000 in just a couple of months. By exploiting a loophole in the site's terms of content, the band was able to crowdfund the shows.

Spotify removed the album on April 25th of that year, citing a violation of it's terms of service.

Nonetheless, the band was paid what it was owed, and followed through on their promise of a tour, beginning in September of that year.

More importantly, the publicity surrounding the record gave band founder Jack Stratton a platform to propose a more equitable model of payout based solely on each artist's listeners, rather than every listener across the entire site.
