Album Review- The Regrettes "How Do You Love?"
Kevin Alexander

Young love is often like a meteor; it burns fast and burns bright but rarely lasts too long.

On their 2nd studio album, LA-based band The Regrettes devote not just one song but an entire record to that fleeting cycle. Over 15 songs, in under 45 minutes, "How Do You Love?" takes us through the whole cycle; anticipation, infatuation, reality, and the inevitable end. And We ride the entire wave with Lead singer Lydia Knight.

It's sugary sweet but ultimately doesn't fill you up

The record starts with a poem; unless you're Patti Smith, that can feel too much on the nose. But the band rebounds fast, and by the 3rd song, we have "I Dare You," which is easily the record's highlight.

If someone has ever caught your eye, you'll find yourself nodding along as she sings:

Can't seem to sleep, and
I feel my pulse beating
And I wanna keep all my control
But you're the one that brings the sun

That's delicious, but infatuation is rarely enduring.

And that's where this album starts to falter. Everything sounds great at first, but the shine wears off pretty quickly. You're left with a record that is tight musically but consistent almost to a fault.

What you liked at first becomes dull, almost annoying. At least 3 tracks all start the same way, and what was at first novel comes across as formulaic. Like a summer fling, this record is fun, but there's just not that much "there" there.

If records were relationships, this one should be friend-zoned.
