Gorillaz- "Feel Good Inc."
For a song railing against the vapid nature of fame, clout chasing, and cheap thrills, "Feel Good Inc" sure has a lot of depth.
With his days in Blur behind him, Damon Albarn was looking for something new. And he found it in gorillas with partner Jaime Hewlett. Setting the project up as a "virtual band" of four fictional characters freed Alborn from the constraints of Britpop he felt with his previous band.
For the sophomore effort, Demon Days, the pair enlisted a lot of help, with hip hop OGs De la Soul featuring on "Feel Good Inc." It's Maseo whose iconic laugh is heard on the track.
From Albarn;
"When they [De La Soul] arrived, they were just messing around, trying to make each other laugh. Fortunately, we recorded most of that, and that's how we got the crazy-sounding laugh you hear on the track. The whole thing worked amazingly, but most of it was an accident."
Gorillaz's sound is a melting pot of all the directions he wanted to wander off in; there's hip hop, electronica, funk, and more. All mixed in a sort of sonic gumbo that somehow manages to be cohesive. Whether by accident or by design, it all seems to work amazingly.
And on this day in 2005, "Feel Good Inc." peaked at #1 on Billboard's Alternative Rock chart.
