I write at the intersection of experimentation, analytics and data driven decision making. Here I'll also cover 'starting a newsletter' and remote work.

Doing something new? Plan for failure
Made by @kevinanderson

This is why you should do a pre-mortem.

You had committed to it, but you failed.

At the start, you were so full of energy and had so many ideas you could pursue. Your life would radically change by doing this challenge.

But you could have seen this coming. What a pity you did not do the pre-mortem first.

Never expect to fail, but always plan for it. The fastest way to get back on track is to have a plan for when you're off it.” — James Clear

A simple pre-mortem exercise would have identified these 4 behaviors:

You postponed

"Let me do it tonight"

You planned to work on it in the early mornings, but you kept on postponing it till late in the evening. When that time came, you were too tired, so it took you more time than necessary. You had to make a late nighter and missed your next morning activity again. Repeat.

You lost motivation

"Why am I doing this?"

Life got in the way. You were busy at work and needed to balance that with homeschooling your kids. Then you simply forgot it one day and said "I will skip for once". The next day was even busier, and you said "I will do it tomorrow". Repeat.

You became distracted

"Oh, that's a cool idea"

You started well. Stuck to the game plan and kept your eye on the ball. People started responding and that triggered many new ideas. "What if ...? Yes, that would be cool. Maybe the domain name is still available." Repeat. And now you feel overwhelmed.

You kept looking for the best perfect quintessential ...

“Have no fear of perfection, you'll never reach it.” — Salvador Dali

The idea was good, but you tried to perfect it. In the end you had nothing, because you didn't finish. Repeat.

Please, do a pre-mortem. Do it now. Before, it's too late.

Now make your plan to get back on track when it happens.
