Time really is a circle; I can see that now. We are trapped between a past we can't return to and a future that is uncertain. And it takes guts to live here, in the hard space between the anticipation and realization. - Kate Bowler in No Cure for Being Human
I have planned to write about death and dying ever since I started Ship 30 for 30.
I deeply care about normalizing these discussions - and yet I've resisted. We are all going to die. Life is the only chronic condition that none of us survive.
One of my major goals this year is to plan to die a good death at the end of a great (long) life. Here are the items on my plan for this year to make sure that can happen.
Review my will. I created my will in 2013 but haven't reviewed it since. I am adding a step to my annual review to read through my will.
Write letters/make videos for loved ones. I don't have children of my own. However, I have nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews I adore. I'd like to write a letter or make a video for each one every few years to capture special memories as a keepsake for them.
Update my important documents notebook. I maintain detailed records but since launching my own business, many of my accounts, policy agencies, and other items have changed. I need to budget a day to updating my notebook. This notebook also includes my end of life plans which include my living will and further details on my desire to die a non-medicalized death - likely working with hospice and palliative care at a certain point.
Develop a funeral plan. I have not decided if I am going to purchase funeral insurance. Regardless of that decision, I want to write a plan for my funeral so that my nieces know what my wishes are.
What steps do you need to take to plan for a good death at the end of a great life? What would you add to my plan?
