From as early as 6 years old I remember staring at the mirror, thinking, wishing I was one of those girls with a more slender physique, cheeks that weren't as chubby or longer legs.

Fast forward twenty five years later, sitting in the office of an image consultant seeking help transitioning my image to that of a business owner. Little did I know what was in store.

"Look into that mirror", she shared, as we stood in front of a full length.

"Starting at your feet, we're going to show appreciation for your body".

I froze. The first two were ok, feet, ankles. But then we got to calves. I stopped. The tears came. All I could muster was "I'm grateful for my calves because they help me walk".

This is the lens we're looking out into the world with. The lens that we experience all our relationships. The lens that colours our thoughts, emotions, words and actions.

So why don't we talk about it more?

We think relationships are between two or more people. But relationship systems are so much more than that. Our primary system is within ourselves.

After being a professional coach for more than a decade, so much of what we search for is "out there"

New job. Better house. Business growth.

But if we don't work on what's in our heart first, none of that is going to matter.

Listening, compassion, love, respect and communication are core in any relationship. Ourselves included.

Listening deeply without judgement.

Compassion and talking to ourselves as we would a dear friend.

Getting to know our own truth, not the one family/friends/spouse/community wants for us.

Thinking back on that six year old, what would happen if someone saw and intervened with compassion, celebrating all the beautiful parts.
