I have been practicing Notion for 6 months.
Along the way, I have done all sorts of things to try to get better:
I followed tutorials of Thomas Frank Explains, Creative Cove, and Easlo on YouTube.
I tested how some functionalities work together on my own.
I learned basic Notion formulas.
And all of these things helped me a ton.
But if I had to start all over again as a complete beginner, this is the simple framework I wish I had for learning how to create Notion templates:
Step 1: Know Your Why
Why do you want to build this particular notion template? I'm building a birthday tracker so that I can wish my family and friends birthdays without forgetting. Your why clarifies the process.
Step 2: List Out The Features
What do you want to have in this template? For birthday tracker - age, relationship, next birthday, days till next birthday, etc.
Step 3: Figure Out The Overlapping Sections
When working with two databases, some information needs to be shared between them. For example, expenses and categories are interlinked, with expenses showing the related category, and categories showing the associated expenses.
Step 4: Build an MVP
Start with a basic template. Do not overthink or believe that you need advanced features or functionality right off the bat. Add one feature at a time.
When you're first starting out, this is all that matters.
