How backbiting creates a toxic work environment and Socrates simple 3 step test to avoiding the gossip!

You won't believe what happened with John, it's unbelievable... it’s juicy… 😉😉

Backbiting is talking negatively about a third person when they are not present.

We do it because it creates a feeling of elevation as we talk other people down. It also makes us seem interesting because we have juicy information that attracts attention. Sadly, it is just another form of bullying.

Corporate psychotherapist Glenn D. Rolfsen discovered that many employees and leaders talk negatively about their colleagues in secret.

He studied and proved that by eliminating backbiting in the workplace, people showed up more. They felt less division. And overall productivity increased.

Famous Greek philosopher Socrates bumped into one of his contacts. Their interaction gives us timeless wisdom on the art of avoiding backbiting.

“Socrates did you hear about your friend?”.

Socrates responded: “No but before you tell me you need to pass the triple filter test”.

✅ Test #1: Is what you're telling me *TRUE*?

The friend replied: “Well, I don’t know.”

✅ Test #2: Are you going to tell me something *GOOD* about my friend?

The friend replied: “Oh no on the contrary! Nothing good! Just juicy!”

✅Test #3: Are you going to tell me something *USEFUL*?

The friend replied: “Oh no it’s not useful.”

You don't know if it’s true, it’s nothing good and not useful – do not bother telling!

Avoid backbiting for your own sake and to foster a positive work environment by following Socrates' timeless triple filter test.
