The Nonsense of Work-Life Balance: My Personal Story

The Nonsense of Work-Life Balance: My Personal Story

Let me share a story with you. It's about why I believe the whole idea of work-life balance is, frankly, utter nonsense.

Let's start with life itself. It's not like a cake that you can neatly slice into "work" and "not work" pieces. The concept of dividing life into two separate boxes – where work is this tough thing you just "have to do", and life is everything fun – now, that seems pretty outdated to me.

I remember clearly when I was 15, working at a paper factory in my hometown during the school holidays. That was my first brush with the "real working world". The job wasn't easy for me, but I felt so grown-up and cool doing it. However, what really puzzled me back then was how most people I met there viewed work as something they had to do, and it was separate from their lives. They tried to get through their shifts from 6 AM to 2 PM with the least effort, just so they could start 'living' after 2 PM.

I thought to myself back then, “I never want to 'work' in my life.” And guess what? I managed it, even though many around me say I'm “always working”. People often jokingly say I have a good work-work balance. My response? I always say I have a sensational life-life balance ☺️

And here's the thing: my life doesn't pause when I'm working. I still live and breathe and enjoy most parts of my day. My main goal was to find work that doesn't feel like an extreme contrast to the 'life' part of 'work-life balance' but rather something that complements it.

Now, here's the part where I want to motivate you. Think about your own life-life balance. The key is not to find a job where every day feels like a holiday. It's about finding meaning, joy, and satisfaction in what you do, so much so that the lines between work and play start to blur. When you love what you do, it doesn't feel like a burden; it becomes a part of your life that enriches you.
