I write about Dad stuff. If you don't have a Dad, I'm in your corner. If you're a struggling parent this is a place for you too.

How to Build Your Idea Distillery.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Good ideas aren't hard to come by either. The difference between a good idea and a great idea is how concentrated and refined it's become.

In the age of the internet idea distillation is even more important. There's too much noise for your ideas to stand out if they aren't already 100 proof.

How do you know if your ideas are sufficeintly concentrated? Without a system you won't.

How to build your idea distillery.

Ingredients-If you want the best ideas you need the best ingredients. You can consume content from "experts" all day and that can help get the juices flowing but you're not solving the those experts problems.

The vital ingredients come from your current/prospective customers. They're the ones who's problems you're solving.

They know their pain points and concerns BETTER than anyone, they will tell you what they need.

Reduction-Idea creation is a frothy process and if you're human you like adding more than subracting. Don't fall into the "more is better trap." If it's not essential it's dead weight.

Cut it and move on.

Testing-There are two categories of testing; user testing and "civilian testing."

User testing is easy, put your work to the test with the users and then gather as much information as possible.

Civillian testing is more difficult. The intention of civilian testing is to determine the clarity of your message. If you've done your job the average person can understand your idea without any specialized knowledge.

Tuning-This is where you apply the finishing touches and check your work.

  • Do you have all the right ingredients?

  • Have you eliminated all of the dead weight?

  • Have you thoroughly vetted your idea with user and cvilillian testing?

Now you're ready to pump out 100 proof ideas that can't be ignored.
