Positive Approach:

The closer or within reach the goal seems (you are making progress towards achieving the goal), the Happier, Cheerful, Joyous you are. Joy or positive valence measures progress towards the goal.

Negative Approach:

The farther or beyond reaching the goal seems (you are not making progress towards achieving the goal), the sadder, more dejected and disappointed you are. Sadness measures the distance between you and achieving your goal.

Positive Avoidance:

When running from a threat/undesired state, the closer or within reach the escape seems, the more relieved, content & at peace you feel

If a miraculous escape happens very near to the anti-goal you become surprised, thankful and in awe about your situation

Negative Avoidance:

When moving towards the anti-goal (away from the threat) the farther or beyond reach the escape seems, and the more fearful and anxious you are.

Fear measures the nearness of the anti-goal, & how much lack of control you have with regards to the situation

It’s tough to force yourself to do something, but much easier to make you want to do it.
